Planning Meals When You Work From Home 

When you work from home, there is an event that happens several times a day that can ruin your life:  eating.  You have to eat, and your family wants to eat.  Breakfast, lunch, dinner and all kinds of snacks before, after and in between.  It keeps happening over and over, and usually just when you are in the middle of something important for your job.  We all have different ways of coping with the everlasting demand of meal planning.  Here are a few:

• “Perfectly planned.”  You have menus for all meals and snacks posted on the refrigerator, cross referenced to the cookbook and page number of  the recipes and the location of all ingredients.  You keep veggies and fruit cut up in little individual containers in the fridge to make it easy for the kids to have a healthy snack—as if they had a choice, because you don’t keep junk food in your house.  Advantage:  All your ducks are in a row, and anybody who can read and turn on the stove can take over in an emergency.  Disadvantage:  A little obsessive-compulsive, don’t you think?
• “Order in.”  In an emergency, near emergency, or reasonable opportunity you throw up your hands and pick up the phone.  Advantage:  You don’t have to cook.  Disadvantage:  A diet heavy on the pizza, and it’s a budget-breaker.
• “Creative cookery.”  You specialize in last-minute planning.  When the cries for hunger reach such a pitch that you can no longer ignore them, you jump up and create something out of whatever you can find.  You family enjoys culinary adventures like grilled chicken breasts with Worcestershire-mayonnaise sauce on a bed of leftover spaghetti noodles, or Corn chowder made from cream of mushroom soup and canned creamed corn.  Advantage:  Your family gets to try lots of interesting dishes.  Disadvantage:  Your family has to try lots of interesting dishes.
